Engine Failures And On-Board Fires: Are The Qantas A380 And Boeing Dreamliner Problems Hurting Travellers' Confidence?
News of aviation disasters such as missing aircraft, crashes and emergency landings are thankfully few and far between. It seems, however, that in recent weeks there have been a number of high profile incidents that have affected airlines, share prices and customer confidence.
All seemed well until the incident on November the 4th when a Qantas A380 engine failure resulted in a harrowing emergency landing. The engine failure in itself is cause for serious concern, but an issue larger than the failure itself is why debris from the failed engine broke free of the engine casing to tear through the wing and enclosed fuel tanks. It was fortunate that the stray debris didn't cause an explosion that would likely have resulted in the loss of the aircraft and the people on-board.
Moving on just 24 hours to November 5th, and yet another less catastrophic engine failure; this time, again involving a Rolls-Royce engine on a Qantas Boeing 747-400. The plane that was bound for Sydney was forced to turn back to Changi Airport not long after take-off.
Only a few days later on November the 9th, Boeing aborted a test flight of its long-delayed 787 Dreamliner after a fire forced an emergency landing in Texas.
While the quick succession of these incidents may be nothing more than a strange coincidence, some have started to ask questions about design, testing and maintenance budgets, and whether economic pressures are forcing cutbacks in these areas.
Although airlines and aircraft engine manufacturers vow to get to the root of these incidents, will the world ever discover the true cause of these failures? The A380 and the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 and Trent 1000 engines are fairly new in aviation terms. The Trent 900 was granted final certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on 29 October 2004, and the Trent 1000 engine received joint certification from the FAA and EASA on 7 August 2007.
