Engineering jobs are growing, but number of potential candidates is falling

This week a leading energy firm expressed their concern that there were too few students planning to secure engineering jobs after they graduate

.

This is encouraging for anyone wanting to pursue engineering jobs, because it shows that the industry is still healthy and should open up recruitment options to any potential engineers.

In fact, this was underlined by Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of Centrica. According to AOL News, he said: "The government plans for 400,000 jobs to be created in UK green industries by 2015. Yet, unless we convince young people of the exciting and rewarding careers available in energy today, the UK will lack the skills to take advantage of the green agenda."

With a growing emphasis on green energy, there will be an increased demand for people in engineering jobs, who can design and improve technology that will help drive down the carbon footprint of the country and boost renewable energy efforts.

People have always been drawn to engineering jobs because it offers a high level of job satisfaction. Engineering jobs are popular with imaginative, creative people, who often choose design engineering jobs. People who are drawn to laboratories and experiments tend to flourish in test engineering jobs, where as organised people work well as development engineers.

The work that comes with engineering jobs is challenging, which keeps people intellectually challenged and helps with job satisfaction. Projects are often very different from each other, so the work engineers complete will always be different - there's little chance of engineering jobs involving routine, desk-bound processes.

It's also a well paid job, and with a growing number of jobs being created, it offers job security. Whilst money should not be the motivation to pursue a career, many engineers find this a particularly sweet benefit.

Finally, engineering jobs bring with them a level of prestige. It's an important function which helps sustain the nation's infrastructure and a role which can see you own patents for your inventions.
