There are different types of pond lighting; the most common are halogen or LED

. Halogen lamps are inexpensive, but all halogen bulbs are white and they give off high amounts of heat. Then there's LED lighting, an alternative to halogen that's seeing a big rise in popularity. LED lights are available in any colorin fact they can be programmed to change color, creating an underwater light show. They have a very long life span and use far less energy than halogen fixtures, plus they're environmentally friendly because they use so little energy. Once you've thought about your bulb options, it's time to start designing. Think about whether you want subtle lighting or something a little bolder. Do you want to see your whole pond area at night, or do you want to highlight certain features of your pond for a more mysterious look? You'll be able to achieve the look you want through a combination of underwater pond lighting, above water lighting, and lighting around the perimeter.

Underwater lights are very commonthe deeper the pond, the brighter your bulbs need to be. One common way to light underwater is with a kit that has lamps that are staked to the bottom of the pond. There are also submersible lights that are encased in rock shaped housing, allowing them to blend with the other rocks in the pond.

Above the water, you may decide you want floating pond lights. Solar lights simply float on the water and come on at dusk. Certain fixtures will have the bulb pointing down into the water to emulate moonlight shining into the water.

Lighting the outside of your pond is a good idea both for aesthetic and safety reasons. You might decide to keep it simple, with stake lights or recessed lights that simply shine on the outline of the pond. Then again, you might decide that you want to go all-out with your outdoor pond lighting, spotlighting architectural or botanical features.

Your pond is already the star of your landscape during the day. A few small additions to your landscape lighting can make it a spectacular nighttime view as well.
