Teeth whitening may become increasingly popular with people looking for love as research shows that smiles matter to potential partners.Research by Philips Sonicare revealed that eight per cent of women consider white teeth an important advantage as they look for a gorgeous smile when considering a relationship with a new partner.The research found that 14 per cent of men said that a petite, perfectly formed mouth makes a great smile, which could result in women undergoing cosmetic dentistry to achieve such a look.Although 78 per cent of respondents said that a person's teeth are the key ingredient to a great smile, there was a difference in opinion about what made the perfect set of gnashers.The survey revealed that 43 per cent of people said that sparkling white teeth were the most important factor, while 35 per cent argued that straight teeth are essential for a great smile.Furthermore, 65 per cent of people said that stained teeth would put them off someone's smile, which would negatively affect their chances of entering a relationship with them.Dentist Dr David Winkler said: "What makes us smile can say a lot about the type of person we are, as can the way we smile and how well we look after our smile."Naturally, if you've got sparkling white teeth, you'll smile with confidence, so it's important to practice thorough brushing habits on a regular basis."The research also discovered that women thought Julia Roberts' Oscar-winning smile was the most desirable celebrity grin due to the display of a perfect set of shiny white teeth.Roberts came top off the poll with 22 per cent of the vote, while pop princess Kylie Minogue narrowly came second with 21 per cent and pouty Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie came third with 19 per cent.There was bad news for controversial singer Amy Winehouse as the musician only claimed one per cent of the vote and finished below fellow pop star Posh Spice Victoria Beckham.Men, on the other hand, want to emulate the charming smile of George Clooney or the confident grin of Tom Cruise as these two Hollywood heavyweights had the most envied teeth among males.Meanwhile, the smiles of Pete Doherty and David Guest found something in common as they both finished in last place as the pair each received only one per cent of the vote.
