Enjoy historic Havana on luxurious Caribbean cruises

If you are looking for a luxurious holiday in the sun that enables you to enjoy some history and culture, you'll find Caribbean cruises that stop at Havana difficult to beat.

A cruise around the Caribbean is guaranteed to be a relaxing experience, with sunshine, soaring temperatures, beautiful scenery, rum cocktails and excellent food combining to make you feel like you are enjoying a touch of paradise.

But you will also find there is plenty to do and see while you are in the region - if you want to tear yourself away from the sun lounger.

Stops at Fort de France, Montego Bay, Bridgetown and Castries will provide you with the opportunity to experience the rich and varied culture of the region, but the Cuban capital Havana is likely to be the highlight of any voyage around the Caribbean.

It has a fascinating history as one of the key trading ports on the route between the new world and Europe. Since being founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Havana has been occupied by the British and Americans, before finally falling into the hands of Fidel Castro's supporters in the 1950s.

A tour of the city will allow you to see how the various settlers and rulers have influenced the local architecture, with neo-classical, colonial and art deco buildings all common sights.

There are a host of landmarks you won't want to miss - from the stunning cathedral, to the Morro fortress and the National Capital Building, which acts as the seat of government - but you are also sure to enjoy just strolling around and drinking in the atmosphere.

Havana has a number of fascinating museums to visit, including one based in Ernest Hemmingway's former home. The villa is packed with the late author's possessions, including his extensive library, and is a real treat for anyone with an interest in literature.

While they may not be museums in the traditional sense, you are also likely to enjoy a tour of one of the local cigar factories to see the world's best torcedors in action and a trip to the Bocoy Rum Factory to learn how the sugarcane spirit is made.

And rum is, of course, likely to feature in any night out in Havana, with the drink an ingredient in many of the cocktails you will enjoy during an evening at Tropicana. A trip to the upmarket nightclub is the perfect way to round off a day in the Cuban capital, as you will be treated to a show featuring traditional music and more than 200 dancers in extravagant costumes performing exuberant routines - a sight that is bound to live long in your memory.
