Enjoying A Cream Tea In Devon

Located in the picturesque Southwest of England on the borders of Somerset

, Dorset and Cornwall, Devon is an area that's primarily famous for three things: Dartmoor, famous moorland that covers 368 square miles of varied terrain, Cider; the apple based alcoholic beverage and its invention of the Devonshire Cream Tea.

For the uninitiated a Cream Tea is a delicious combination of scones, strawberry jam and Devonshire clotted cream all served with a pot of tea. The traditional Cream Tea consists of two scones, a pot of jam and a pot of cream. Normally partaken in tea rooms, you don't have to have cottages in Devon to enjoy one. But it helps.

The Devonshire method of eating a Cream Tea is to split the scone in two, cover each half with clotted cream, and then add strawberry jam on top. Traditionally it is important that the scones be warm (ideally, freshly baked), clotted cream (not whipped), and that the jam be strawberry (although raspberry jam is sometimes used as an alternative where strawberry isn't available). Butter should never be included, and the tea should be served with milk.

If you are holidaying in Devon you need to have at least one Cream Tea while you are there, what could be better than stepping out of your Devon holiday cottage and spending the afternoon exploring the surrounding area with an idyllic countryside walk and stopping at the local village and having a Cream Tea at the local tea room, or buying your scones, jam and clotted cream from the local shop and retiring back to your Devon cottages to enjoy.

For the more adventurous amongst you why not try baking some scones for that full Devon Cottage experience? You'd probably need to make sure that you can bake and that your holiday cottage has a suitable kitchen in it, but other than that the only thing that's holding you back is your imagination!

The Devon Cream Tea is popular throughout country and has grown to become a staple of British tea time. More suited to the Summer months, just the mention of the word immediately conjures up peaceful imagery of sitting in an English country garden with loved ones at teatime, sipping tea from a china cup and eating a cream and jam covered scone while overlooked by the gorgeous rolling hills of the Devon countryside as you relax in the hazy summer sunshine.
