Back in the 1960s, areas of the French Alps were becoming rapidly developed as, at the time, the playground of the rich and "jet-set". One of the best-known developments took place around Morzine, but a local businessman and associates noticed the potential of a rocky ledge above the town. This was the first idea that would eventually lead to the resort of Avoriaz.

What makes Avoriaz unusual is that, architecturally, it owes its unique culture to the 60s modernism as typified by people like Le Corbousier. Many of its major buildings were designed as expressions of modernism and the confidence of the times, and they are today unique in appearing to be almost as if they had their origin in a major financial centre. You"ll find high-rises, angular designs and lots of glass and steel, which is quite breathtaking in an Alpine context. The resort is part of the vast Portes Du Soleil skiing area that overlaps France and Switzerland. As you might imagine, this means you have a vast range of skiing and snow sports activities surrounding you "" whichever direction you head in.

Avoriaz itself is entirely car-free and totally skiable. It has about 130kms of skiing area based around 50 runs; these vary from essentially nursery slopes up to those that would be described as for "experts only". There are also a large number of snow cannons so even if the weather goes against you, those skis and boards should still get some good use. Brand new in 2012 comes the staggering Aquariaz "" a vast water arena with pools and tropical plants. It's a lot of fun and ideal for loosening up those tight muscles!

In the 60s, this resort was considered exceptionally trendy and for the moneyed classes only; today, however, it has evolved comfortably into one that caters for mainstream visitors. Most of the accommodation here is self-catering and for that reason there are plenty of restaurants and bars around. Nightlife is plentiful and lively without being intrusive though.

Geneva airport ski transfers will get you to this great resort in about two hours or so "" making it an accessible and desirable ski holiday destination.
