Enjoying Bingo Today: Centuries Past And It Is Still Exhilarating

Bingo is for everyone! Hearing the cry of "B51" and finalizing your row

, four corners or diagonal and claiming the prize has been a treasured pass time for many centuries. Originating in Italy in the 1500's known then as Lotto, Bingo has been through many transformations but keeping the original idea in tact! That is covering up those little pictures or numbers with a bean, paper square, stamp or chip in hopes filling in your row, column or other posted configurations and of claiming a prize!

Bingo wasn't always known as Bingo. In the early years after the game swept through Europe and the United Kingdom and finally into the Americas, it was affectionately known as "Beano". Hummm, no, not because of any anti gas properties. Beano was named so because beans were used to cover up the called squares.

The chance of winning big at Bingo is always looming in the air. You can feel the excitement and the anticipation of players next to you as the letter-numbered balls are twirled in a cage, sucked up by air pressure or displayed on an LCD board and called out to every attentive ear! However, the game like all games has its odds. In the 1920's a New York gentleman, Edward Lowe licensed the game boards for distribution to playing halls. He hired a mathematician to come up with varying board data using a ratio of letter-to-number and board distribution in a single lot. The combination of numbers to letters on your board or boards may or may not be a winner but you will never know if you don't take a chance and play!

During a typical Bingo game, as combinations are called, you peruse your boards (usually players have more than one going at a time) for the all-hailed call. You are so close! Then you steal a glance at your neighbor's card and lo and behold they are one away in several directions. The anticipation is thick as you look up to note that there are possibly a hundred players in your room. Do you have a chance? Yes! You do! Everyone does, and that is why people have been playing for centuries and keep the game alive!

Game boards cost a nominal amount and the favored cover up is no longer a bean, but an ink stamp. If playing online, of course its electronic and could be a picture of a bean, a check mark, circle, or any variety of ink stamps depending on the web site. Civic halls and churches commonly host Bingo nights for charities so that you know at least a portion of the proceeds are going to a good cause. Even if you don't win big, some lucky charity is benefiting from your contribution to a fun event. Online playing doesn't usually involve a charity, its all about the players! There are chat rooms that you join in to play. Some rooms are "noisy" and some rather quiet. If a player is home bound, online playing is a way to engage socially in a relatively safe environment.

Bingo has come full circle. Many states offer Bingo Lottery cards that are scratch and win instantly! These cards too have had their ratios figured out; but you will never know if its a winner if its not bought and played! Bingo is here to stay. Its a social game where there can be more than 8 players like some board games.

Wherever played, its always more fun to bring a friend or two to an action packed event.
