Enlarging Perspective

Many of my clients who are working full-out, working through conflict in a large-scale

change initiative, exploring diversity issues, grappling with profit issues, find seeing the big picture difficult as they are surrounded by the seemingly insurmountable "reality" of it all. Part of my work in organizations and communities is assisting with enlarging space around perspective.

Some teams act like crabs in a bucket one tries to climb out and the others pull it back in. When focusing employees' thoughts, feelings, and actions on creating what they "want" space is created around the issues. In a respectful work environment, we invite employees to work towards what they want the way they want to be treated, the work that has meaning for them, the experiences they want at work, what it feels like to be valued, what actions they will take to support each other. Positive energy is generated by the positive questions that link people to their innate goodness. The atmosphere becomes charged as more and more people generate this positive energy and influence each other (synergy). In the increased space, people breathe deeper heightening the energy level as people imagine highly positive outcomes.

Coaching from a larger perspective is a provocative approach to organizational learning and change, and cultivates a "Culture of Acknowledgement". Inquiry into the "art of what's possible" begins with acknowledgement and appreciation, leads to a positive image of the future and inspires collective action. This model affirms people, identifies what's compelling and accelerates learning at all levels of the organization.

What we focus on becomes our reality.

We will have more confidence to journey into the future if we carry forward the best of our past and present.

Working together to build on our common interests begins with honouring our differences.

Organizations move in the direction of what they study. The questions we ask determine what we find. Don't make the mistake of thinking that this technique means wearing rose-coloured glasses. Coaching in this way is a rigorous approach that does not gloss over problems, but uses them as learning opportunities. Instead of being stuck in the past, we look for the vitality of the organization, build on existing strengths to create a bold desirable future. My clients reflect back that they begin to see that when they listen and frame the "problem" in this way, the opportunities begin to emerge.

This coaching process is the cooperative search for the best in people, their organizations, and the world around them. It involves systematic discovery of what gives a system "life" when it is most effective and capable in economic, ecological, and human terms. We involve the art and practice of asking questions that strengthen a system's capacity to heighten positive potential. It mobilizes inquiry into what is working, often involving hundreds and sometimes thousands of people. I've used this process in organizations throughout North America, Australia, Siberia, Israel and Jamaica. My challenge to you: try beginning your next staff meeting with, "What's Working"?
