Ensure Generous Blooms By Taking Care of Your Orchids Roots

If you love orchids and wonder if you can grow them yourself, the answer is yes. Orchids are not so difficult to look after. That is if you understand their requirements and provide them their needs. You will find many resources on how to take care and grow orchids; from lighting requirements to water and potting needs.

The key to having healthy and generous flower-bloomer orchids is healthy orchids roots. You need to take care of the roots first and foremost so that your plant grows strong and fit. Although orchids are known to be tough but if they have weak roots, they will suffer and eventually die.

You must keep the roots systems clean in able for your orchids to breath. You may do this by trimming the orchids roots and cleaning the debris surrounding the them. Here are some steps to help you. These steps are usually done when repotting your orchids.

Taking care not to harm the orchids roots, take the plant by the middle section and loosen the plant by gently squeezing the pot (applicable only if you plastic pots, of course)

Clear the orchids roots of the old potting mixture.

Rinse the orchids roots with water. Make sure to thoroughly get old the potting mixtures and debris left behind.

Set aside while you ready your tools for cutting dead orchids roots. (must be sterilized, in either hot water or alcohol)

Inspect the roots and look for the dead ones. Healthy and alive orchid roots are green colored. Give the roots that you think dead a little gently squeeze and if they are mushy and dry, they can be cut off from the plant.

Be sure to cut as far as possible to ensure removal of the decay.

Repot your orchid immediately. Make sure that it is stable and secure when you repot.

By taking care of your orchids roots, you take care of the whole plant. However, other requirements of your orchids must also be taken into great consideration to have healthy and thriving orchids.
