Enter A Time Capsule At The Dubai Heritage And Diving Village
Today Dubai is the busiest out of the seven emirates of The United Arab Emirates
, but it had very humble beginnings as a 11th century trading post. The earliest historical record of Dubai dates back to 1095 and at the time the city was known for its pearling industry. Tourists can rediscover this history when they visit the Dubai Heritage and Diving Village located near Dubai Creek.
Among the citys bright lights and cosmopolitan feel it is easy forget that the city had a history of pearl diving, art and craft and a colorful maritime history. Pearl diving which is one of the oldest professions in Dubai was what initially drew European merchants here back in the 11th and 12th century. The city has experienced exponential growth since then and quickly established itself as a trading hub in the Middle East.
Today the traditional method of pearl diving can be seen by visitors to the village. A ship consists of about 10 to 60 sailors led by a Nokhaza (the captain) and a handful of divers. The ship heads out toward areas that are known for oysters and divers plunge into the water and stay submerged up to 3 minutes.
Among the other attractions at the Dubai Heritage and Diving Village are the craft shops. These boutiques showcase traditional Middle Eastern art and craft such as pottery, weaving and hand-woven fabric. Relics of Dubais maritime past are also on display here and crossing the creek on an Abra (a traditional boat) is an immensely pleasurable experience.
Visitors can also experience the life of Bedouin nomads at the recreated village complete with authentic Bedouin tents, weapons and traditional household equipment. Folk music and dance performances are usually held in the evenings and dont forget to accept a friendly Bedouins offer to ride his camel.
Being located close to the Dubai Creek this little picture postcard village is in close proximity to many a Dubai hotel such as Raffles Dubai, UAE. The Arabs are known the world over for the exceptional hospitality and luxury accommodation Dubai still stays true to these age-old customs.
