Enterprise level

This is the newest level in the hierarchy, added because of the realization that

many corporations have complete families of systems above the factory level that draw from factory performance and attempt to capture corporate strategy in a rigorous fashion.

This stratum characterizes the corporate functions of corporate financial services, corporate strategic planning, corporate human resources planning, corporate technology development, and other high-level functions.

(2) Factory Level

This is the series of systems that support the plant manager and immediate staff in the operation of a singular entity typically producing a family of products.


At this level the purpose is to provide systems that support direction from the plant manager to the departments as well as supporting the performance and financial data roll-up to the enterprise systems if such a structure exists.

Typical functions represented here include the plant general manager, plant financial functions, plant operations planning, sales and so on.

(3) Center Level

At this level most of the detailed planning-occurs. Typical functions supported at this level include all design functions, material requirement plans, all manufacturing operations plans, all staffing activities, and the integration of a master schedule of work to perform with the manufacturing capabilities of potential output in a given time frame.

(4) Cell Level

This level becomes the intermediary between plans and actual operations on the shop floor. The bulk of tile functions performed here are in the control mode.

By this is meant the downloading of information to a shop floor supervisor or machine and the ensuing uploading of information on progress and problems. Modern thought hinges around a local area network (LAN) as a communication vehicle at the cell level. It possesses the ability to download and upload with the accuracy and rapidity necessary for on-time delivery of data.

(5) Station Level

Most appropriate at this level are the pickup, movement, and placing of a part from one operation to another. This is the heart of all material handling systems as well as of most assembly operations. The key here is the timing and accuracy necessary to ensure 100% good parts.

(6) Process Level

The most basic of levels, this is also the most visible on the shop floor and the best understood. Most manufacturers can look at a part and tell how it should be produced. The issue of CIM is how to ensure data integrity to and from the process level and how to ensure control of the process as well as part presentation to the process.
