Engineering is often closely linked with the environment and there are a few degree which allow you to explore your interest in both. These two interests can work really well together.
The reason I have mentioned engineering is because there are two very specific and interesting environmental courses which utilise engineering skills. Both these courses are run by then environment agency and if you do a little research into the fine details you will discover that you will be provided with good support along the way. These degrees are outlined below, take a look and see if they are relevant to your interests.
River and Coastal Engineering Foundation Degree
This is a two year training programme that develops your skills in river and coastal engineering. You will have a mentor to guide you through the process and explain the main components of the course. This programme also offers 12,000 in training allowance per year and what is really great is that you get 20 days holiday per year!
The course is structure so that you complete 6 one week study blocks and a major project every year. This course is great for anyone who wants to undertake a career in civil engineering and has a strong interest in the environment.
There are vacancies all over the country which is good because it gives you the opportunity to study in a new place with a slightly different environment to study within. Because of the great opportunities that this foundation degree provides it is very popular and it can be hard to obtain a place. There are only 19 places across all the different locations so a good application is essential!
The course covers modules such as engineering skills, flood risk management, flood defence structures, hydrological modelling and project appraisal and procurement.
Local Authorities River and Coastal Engineering Foundation Degree
This foundation degree also last two years and offers some very similar benefits to the River and Coastal Degree. The aim of the course is to utilise both practical skills development with theoretical learning.
On this course you can expect to study modules such as natural channel design and coastal rehabilitation, hydrological modelling, work related learning and flood forecasting and warning systems.
