In the waning seconds of the NFC Championship Game, the 49'ers were trailing the Dallas Cowboys. Joe Montana was rushed out of the pocket on one of the game's final plays and threw a pass toward the back of the end zone. Dwight Clark seemed to appear out of nowhere, snagging the ball with his fingertips and landing in bounds for the winning touchdown. What most people don't know is that Joe Montana now admits that he was attempting to throw the ball out of the end zone since there was one more down to play.

Lou Gehrig

He is perhaps the classiest athlete of all time. He was one of the few who brought goodness to the game as well as to other people. This man stood in front of a crowd of 60,000 people as he was dying from ALS and told those people that he was "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." This might not be the most memorable moment in sports, but it's definitely the most heroic.

Bobby Thompson

In 1951, the Giants were down 4-1 to the Dodgers in the 9th inning. It looked as though the game was over, especially with Ralph Branca on the hill for the Dodgers. This was the rubber match of a three-game series that was for the pennant, so there was a lot on the line. Bobby Thompson hit an unexpected home run into the bleachers, and the Giants won the game 5-4. If you ever hear the famous call, "The Giants win the pennant!" it's from this game.

Wilt Chamberlain

In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single NBA game. This had never been done, and it hasn't been done since. Think about how many records in sports have been broken, yet this one still stands. What makes this moment even more memorable is that the last two points scored by Chamberlain were on an alley-oop dunk. This led to fans storming the court. What most NBA fans don't know is that there were still 46 seconds left on the game clock. The game was never resumed, which means it's possible Wilt could have scored ever more points.

US Hockey Team

In 1980, the US hockey team was made up of teenaged amateurs who had limited training. They were going up against a Soviet team that had not only been 5-3-1 against NHL teams, but they had also shutout the NHL All-Star team. Somehow, the US hockey team defeated the Soviet team by a score of 4-3. Since this was during the Cold War era, this win held more significance than met the eye. Perhaps it was a fore-shadow of things to come for the Soviet Union.
