Epidendrum Orchids: The Truth About The Poor Man's Orchids That You Must Know

If you are looking for an orchid that does not really require a lot of attention then you must meet the Epidendrum orchid species

. Even though Epidendrum orchid is popularly known as the poor man's orchid, its appearance is far from being poor. It is generous with its blooms and can produce up to forty flowers at a time. The blooms are shaped like mini-cattleyas on top of a long spike. The best thing about Epidendrum orchids is that it generally produces flowers again after a few months when the last flowers die. Small plantlets or keikis are also produced from the spikes after flowering giving you yet another orchid!

Natives of the Mexican region, Epidendrum orchids are the most easiest to grow. They require very little attention and are usually very self-supporting. You will find at least four hundred Epidendrum orchid species. Even if this is the only variety of orchids you grow, that number is enough to last you a lifetime.

Diverse Shapes, Colors and Scents

You would be overwhelmed by the shapes, colors and scents during Epidendrum orchids blooming season. The colors of the flowers include shades of white and pink, yellow, orange and red, brown and green. Just imagine an artist palette when you think about the many colors of Epidendrum orchids. You would even find spotted, speckled and bi-colored Epidendrum blooms!

For the scent of the flowers, you will find that there are also varieties. Some produce mild to strong fragrance whilst others do not.

The Epidendrum flowers make great table setting displays for any occasion. May it be weddings, birthdays, dinner parties or just for the pure indulgence in having it on your dinner table in ordinary days.

Propagation

Epidendrum orchids can easily be propagated. As soon as the keikis roots have grown about 2 to 4 inches, you can replant it. The keikis grow after flowering so make sure that you look for some as one stem can yield many plants.

Epidendrum Care

These species of orchids are sun loving plants. They can stand temperatures upto 100 degress Fahrenheit which is great if you live in areas with very hot climates. They also have a different water requirement than most orchids as they love water. You can water them as much as three times a week if you grow them outdoors and the weather is really hot. For the plant to produce more flower spikes, stronger leaves and roots, fertilize regularly with diluted orchid food.
