Everywhere you search, it appears there are beginner-level guitars available for sale. You can even find them at places like Target and Wal-Mart.

However, the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies when purchasing a instrument at the same place you can buy motor oil. Clearly, it's tough to buy a good, novice instrument without wasting your money.

You should look no further than the Epiphone Les Paul Special II, which costs less than $170. Although it's evidently an instrument aimed at the budget market, you still get a lot of bang for the buck.

The Epiphone Les Paul Special II is a worthwhile submission into the budget guitar marketplace with its great playability and full sound.

The Epiphone Les Paul Special II features two open-coil humbucking pickups (the 700T and 650R), which renders the acoustic tone from its basswood body. The instrument features a bolt-on neck (mahogany) and a rosewood fretboard. A tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece are stock, as are dot inlays.

The pickups are controlled via standard 3-way selector switch as well as a master volume and tone control. Regarding the specifications, the scale is 24-3/4" and the nut width is 1-5/8."

Upon our initial inspection, we did have to make a few little readjustments such as intonating the instrument, setting the action, and stiffening up the tuners. The pickup selector was also a bit scratchy.

However, these problems were pretty minor. Overall, we were very impressed with the quality of the Les Paul Special II. The finish (wine red) looks truly nice overall, but it is a touch thin, so you have to try not to nick it too bad.

Overall, both the sound and the action were very strong, especially for a sub-$200 guitar. The neck did have a couple of dead spots, but that's to be expected for budget guitars. It's still a terrific instrument for the money.

Given its price, we highly commend the Epiphone Les Paul Special II for anyone looking for a budget-level guitar that is both playable and good-sounding.About the Author:
