Erotic Stories Do Not Have To Be Erotic Literature To Titillate

Erotic stories do not have to represent what one might regard as erotic literature in order to titillate the reader

. Especially for a reader looking for some fetish, alternate lifestyle or some kind of relatively unique sexual preference, the simple act of finding an erotic story that fits this particular reader's taste may be the most important element in the entire exercise of finding the right erotic story.

While Anais Nin might bring amazingly poignant observations to a lesbian encounter in one of her erotic stories, wherein she might comment on numerous social issues within her interpretation of the story and still arouse strong sexual as well as intellectual stirrings within her reader's libido and/or imagination, it is a pretty wide stretch of anyone's imagination for someone writing about sex with their horse to make meaningful social commentary during such an endeavor. Some activities simply do not lend themselves toward social relevance.

Erotic stories about aberrant sexual preferences would generally be regarded as the wrong bully pulpit for meaningful social commentary. Of course many of us lapsed Catholics have sat through fire and brimstone type, "you are going to go to hell if you don't change your ways," sermons from priests who still have the aroma of an altar boy's sperm on their breath. However, in these instances we were blissfully unaware of the recreational pursuits of the priest prior to his verbally reaming us out, and most of us have become aware that hypocrisy during a religious ritual is often normal behavior.

Actually, erotic stories should not be written simply for the purpose of titillation if they are attempting to be seen as erotic literature, and not all erotic stories purport to be literature. Erotic literature requires a more noble purpose, than simply a reader's arousal in order for it to be labeled "erotic literature." It is important to look at the writer's purpose when examining erotic stories. While most erotic stories will not profess to be actual literature, many will at least try to string a simple plot together and avoid the label "pornography." We see no problem with erotic stories that simply titillate as long as the minimal requirements for a story are present.

"It is the function of art to renew our perception," says Anais Nin. "What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it." Even this relatively simple observation from Nin, when demonstrated in a story rather than flatly stated, could qualify a writer for labeling his or her work as a story rather than raw pornography, even if the main purpose of the story was simply arousing the readers passions.

As usual, there are exceptions to most rules and Donatien Alphonse Franois, Marquis de Sade made a name for himself writing erotic stories about Sadism and Masochism all the way back in the late 1700's. It might be more apt to say he made a name for himself by living out the erotic stories that he eventually wrote down. The former term, Sadism, which is now derived from De Sade's own name and it's counterpart have subsequently created a following beyond the scope of most fetishes.

De Sade's wry and completely libertine view of physical and sexual advantages over the innocent and less able in society, his vivid descriptions of all of the punishments he described, his enjoyment of seeing the pain resulting from such actions and further, his lifelong dedication to same, have created perhaps the most shocking sexual sect of all. S&M as it has come to be abbreviated flourishes still today along with variations of De Sade's themes in modern erotic stories and literature. De Sade's handling of the psychological ramifications of the abuses he fostered in society have established him as the dubious but proud father of sadism.
