Error Analysis Accounting For Language Transfer

An error is a sequence of production in which a certain constituent or combination

of constituents violates any linguistic norm of Standard English usage.

Error analysis, as the term suggests, is the study and analysis of error and is confined to the language learner. It became the acceptable alternative to CAH in the late 1960s and got rapid development in the 1970s. It was Corder who revived Error Analysis through his article The Significance of Learners Errors. As Corder noted: A learners error are significant in that they provide to the researcher evidence of how language is learned or acquired, what strategies or procedures the learner is employing in the discovery of the language. According to Error Analysis theory, errors were no longer regarded as signs of failure or inadequacies of teaching but symbols in relation to the real developmental stage that second language learners used in language learning and identify the causes of these errors.

It is widely acknowledged that first language transfer can trigger a considerable portion of errors in learners second language production. Researchers have been attempting to investigate the sources of learner errors and have come to various conclusions. According to James2001 distinction, errors fall into two categories, namely, interlingual errors and intralingual errors. He defined the former being errors caused by the interference of the learners mother tongue on second language production, and the latter being the ones whose origins are found within the structure of the target language itself.

One of the purposes of doing Error Analysis is to identify the principles which should guide effective error correction. James states that the term correction has been used in three senses: 1) Informing the learners that there is an errorand leaving them to discover it and repair it themselves; 2) providing treatment or information that leads to the revision and correction of the specific instance of error from recurring later; 3) providing learners with information that allows them to revise or reject the wrong rule they are operating with when they produce the error token. Since errors are an indispensable part of the language learning process, learners should try to get them corrected. Therefore, this may greatly help to detect the micro language transfer in the process of using language and shed light on the possibility of how much this transfer can be used in daily life such as advertisement, propaganda etc.
