Es Mercadal

Overview

The village Es Mercadal is situated in the Minorca center in the Balearic Islands in Spain and it is a municipality. It is located midway between Ciutadella and Mahon.

Toro Mountain is the highest in the island and this town lies at the foot of the mountain. Tourism plays a minimal part in this town; however it is worthwhile to visit Minorca's patron saint. You will get genuine Minorcan food in the restaurants in this village; this place is also popular for almond biscuits and manufacture of Sandals. The streets in this village are quiet and the houses whitewashed.

History

The origin for the name "Es Mercadal" is the Latin languageword mercatum meaning market. Majorcan King James II, in1301, established a public commerce center in Minorca and this market is still the attraction on the island.

Climate

The maximum and minimum average temperatures in this city are 26C in August and 10 C in January-February.

Art and Culture

Some of the monuments in this place are as follows:

1.Mount Toro is the highest point (352 M) in this village and this dominates the village. As per the legend, the Virgin statue was found on the rock cleft by a bull (el toro) and this could be the reason for the name Mount Toro. Another opinion is that this has originated from the Arabic word al-tor which means highest mountain. A convent is located at the top of Mount Toro. The statue of Virgin makes this place important for pilgrimage.

Eco-museum has exhibits of countryside historic remains, fauna, botany, etc.
