Escalation On Antidepressant Use Revealed In A Study

Over the past 15 years, a high escalation of antidepressant use was shown in a study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC)

. It also showed a 400 percent escalation in usage among adults 18-44 years old, based on the website Psychiatric Times.

The wrong people are on antidepressants and the right people arent taking them, says Dr. Allen Frances, the author of the article.

Just one-third of severely depressed people are taking them and more than two-thirds have no symptoms of depression, adds Dr. Frances.

Dr. Frances blames advertising and insistent marketing as partly responsible for the booming use of antidepressants.

In general, antidepressant drugs are supposed to reduce extreme sadness, hopelessness and lack of enthusiasm in life that are classic in people suffering from depression. These drugs also treat other conditions, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, premenstrual syndrome, chronic pain, and eating disorders. Depression is a brain illness. The causes of depression could be environmental, psychological, genetic or biochemical factors such as taking drugs and alcohol.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the criteria for depression include fatigue, migraines, digestive problems, social withdrawal, and reduced sex drive.

People in a state of depression may experience the feelings of guilt, regret, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness and self-hatred. Oversleeping and insomnia are also common problems of depressed persons. In extreme cases, other symptoms include unpleasant hallucinations, memory loss, poor concentration, psychosis and suicide.

Talk therapy and antidepressant intake are the usual treatments for depression. Most of the patients consider both. However, according to various clinical studies and researches, antidepressants like Zoloft increases the risk of suicide instead of treating depression. Zoloft has been indicated to cause hazardous side effects and withdrawal symptoms. This is according to the clinical test procedures plus reports from Zoloft users. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already released various advisories on Zoloft intake warnings.

The CDC study also revealed that medical professionals have been convinced that they might have overlooked depression symptoms in their practices.

Meanwhile, drug companies are earning huge profits at the expense of people who might not need to take antidepressant drugs in the first place.

So, Zoloft patients should directly consult their healthcare experts if doubts concerning its effect on their health and state of mind arise. Frustrated users filing a Zoloft lawsuit appears to be getting ground against its manufacturer Pfizer. The public should always consult a doctor before taking any medications to avoid adverse complications. Patients who have suffered from side effects seek compensation from the company. To know more about Zoloft court cases and lawyers, users should seek competent legal advice.
