Job satisfaction is often associated with pay. Many perceive that an employee is happier is he receives a higher pay. There are also perceptions that job pay is associated with gender. This means that female employees have generally higher satisfaction rating that the male employees. There are also beliefs that having an assistant or a full-time employment contributes to job satisfaction.

The issue of job satisfaction is important for many employers. One reason for this is that it is very costly to recruit, hire and train employees. If the turnover rate in a company is high it only means that the company is spending more in recruiting, hiring and training employees.

Job satisfaction is more important for Nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners play important role in health promotion, disease prevention and in the adequate delivery of health care. They assist licensed doctors and physicians in ensuring that the patient receives the best quality of health care.

However, health care institutions constantly experience a high rate of turnover. Nurses often transfer from one company to another. Others choose to retire or change their profession. The high turnover rate could be an indication that they are unhappy with their present job. Considering the difficulty in recruiting, hiring and training new nurse practitioners and considering the important role they place in health care, it is important to find out what de-motivates the nurse practitioners from being satisfied on their job.

In view of the important role they play in the health care industry, it is imperative for a company to find out the different factors that influence a nurse from choosing and remaining active in nursing practice. Several questions have been proposed in this research paper: what are the determinants to job satisfaction among nurse practitioners?; what are the determinants to job satisfaction among nurse practitioners

A review of the earlier studies done on the issue of job satisfaction will reveal that job satisfaction was associated to more years in practice, higher salaries, having an assistant and full-time employment.

However, upon verification of these studies, it was found that nurse practitioners are generally dissatisfied with their job. They were even less satisfied with the autonomy of their job, and the level of their professional, social, and community interaction.

The conclusion that can be gleaned is that the previous perceptions about job satisfaction should not be relied upon by the employers. The employers should find a way and assess their nurse practitioners to find out whether they are happy with their job and what will make them happy with their job. Employers should not rely on perceptions. They should conduct a study that they can use as basis to improve their employment policies.
