Essential Keys to Linking Your Website and Twitter Account

One of the great advantages of social media is that it can be used to complement your website for very little cost other than your time

. You should have the two working together for effective campaigning.

So your tweets should draw your followers to your website landing page. Likewise, your website should provide information on what your tweets are doing. By working together in harmony you will achieve much better interaction between the two.

Your tweets should include a link to your website landing page. And you should monitor the number of followers who click on the link in your tweets.

The way it works is this - you want to increase your sales - you create a landing page on your website - you tweet to attract attention from your followers - your followers land on your landing page - they respond to your call to action.

How do you do this?

Twitter recommends a link shortening tool called Bit.ly It not only shortens those very long links (and you only have 140 characters per tweet, but you can change the Bit.ly link name to flow with your tweet wording. A huge advantage of using Bit.ly is that you get statistics on usage of the shortened link which tells you a lot about who and when they clicked on the link in your tweet.

We suggest you sign up, enter your links into the application so that it will shorten them. So, when you re-visit bit.ly you can see statistics of how many of your followers clicked on the different links you inserted into your tweets.

As your followers increase so should the statistics for the numbers who click on your links and are taken to your landing page.

During the first month you should concentrate on building trust and gaining the confidence of your followers. They need to see your tweets as high value messages. After that first month you can start to think about monetizing your followers.

Monetizing Your Followers

The fundamental reason you are tweeting to your followers is to get them to your website landing page and get certain basic information to allow you to add value to them and eventually monetize them.

So, when they reach your landing page, offer them bonuses, newsletter or something of value to them. To obtain this information they need to 'opt-in' or leave their name and email address.

What we are trying to achieve here is to ensure your landing page and Twitter page complement each other, to develop a process that ensures your Opt-In list is aware of your Twitter activity, and then find a way to automate this process. The aim is to get your blog readers or Opt-In list to your Twitter page and turn them into followers.

The aim is to use your website landing page to complement your Twitter page.

There are widgets available, depending on the software your landing page is built around, which allow you to automatically post your tweets on you page.

If you are a WordPress user, an example is 'WP List Tweets' which is a free plugin that allows you to easily add the latest Tweets from any user, anywhere in your WordPress site. Typically you would have the latest three tweets. The source is selectable - it could be your from Twitter page or anyone else's.

There are widgets that work on almost all sites - like MySpace and Facebook as well.

The great thing about these widgets is that they look like an integral part of your landing page. So if someone reads a tweet on your landing page, they can click on a link within the Tweet and be sent to the site you wanted to send them to.

Our experience is that people going to your site and seeing your latest tweets will be more likely to click through to your twitter page and follow you. Aim achieved!

If you also have a Facebook account, encourage your Facebook followers to follow you on Twitter. Don't forget to encourage your Twitter followers to connect with you on Facebook.

Don't forget your Opt-In list!

If you have a list of email subscribers, send them an email telling them about your tweets and include a link to your Twitter page.
