Essential Qualities Of Entrepreneurs Who Make It

Entrepreneurship is a skill that seems elusive

. No one seems to have a satisfactory answer to the question of whether an entrepreneur is born or made. Some people claim that there are people who are born with a special skill set - ambition, business sense, independence, creativity - and that this is the makings of an entrepreneur. They point to cases like Rockefeller, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates to make their point.

There are other successful businessmen who didn't start out in an entrepreneurial vein, however. Many successful businessmen started in managerial positions, or even lower positions, before catching entrepreneurial fever. These people are what could be called "made" entrepreneurs.

The question then becomes whether there are certain traits that are common to all entrepreneurs, and necessary for successful entrepreneurship. The answer is yes.

First, a strong sense of independence is crucial. By default, an entrepreneur is independent. For someone to be willing to leave behind a secure position or even a promising career for the risk and uncertainty of going into business for themselves, there needs to be a fierce drive for independence. Any successful entrepreneur will value the ability to chart his or her own destiny over the value of being safe and secure in a regular job.

The ability to maintain focus is also crucial. To start a new business, it is important to be able to focus on the goal of turning your business into a success. There are many little tasks involved that you have to keep track of. Everything from finances to inventory to marketing and employee issues fall to the person in charge - you.

If your focus wavers from your goal of business success, and you get bogged down in the pesky details, you will find that your profits suffer. It is not easy to stay focused on the goal - it requires discipline and concerted effort. All entrepreneurs who make a successful go of it have this ability.

A strong drive to succeed is key. You have to be very motivated about your business. If you are not, you can end up astray and lose your heart. If you do this it is all too easy to decide that it just isn't worth it.

Running a startup isn't easy. It's not for the fainthearted, to be sure. The early stages mean long hours and crushing work load and all too often few clients. If an entrepreneur cannot maintain motivation during the bleak periods, they will never make it. Also, there is the issue of employee morale. An entrepreneur has to also keep employees happy and upbeat, or business will suffer.

There are plenty of other qualities that are also important for entrepreneurs to have of course, like patience and creativity and even luck. But if we are talking bottom line, the three I've listed above are the ones an entrepreneur simply must have if they are to have a hope of being successful.
