Network Monitoring and Server Monitoring have become quite essential parts of managing critical IT Systems and Infrastructure for enterprises

. Monitoring enables you not only to be alerted when an outage occurs or critical events happen, but rather also help you analyze the bigger picture on your IT Infrastructure or data center applications.


Monitoring is based on certain standard industry technology protocols. Common ones among them are ICMP, SNMP, and WMI. SNMP is by far the most common platform and is built into most technology devices including servers, switches, routers, firewalls, printers, storage devices, and almost anything with an IP address. SNMP utilizes a community string which when matched, will provide useful and meaningful data about the state of the physical device and attributes.


There are many things that can be monitored. Of course there are basics like disk usage, memory, CPU, availability alerts. Apart from these basics, there is a lot of other monitoring sets that can be applied. These are based on either services being stopped or interrupted, or Event IDs being generated in the Server event logs. With event ID based alerting, different alerts can be setup to be delivered for different sorts of errors, warnings, and event ID occurrences. This can be extremely useful for tapping events like creation of new users, account lockouts, new policies being created on the domain etc.


There are two types of Network Monitoring software available agent based and agent less. An agent is a small piece of software which can be installed on any device which needs monitoring most cases a server or a desktop. The installed software sends useful data to a central server which collects and processes events as they occur. Agent less systems are able to do the monitoring without any software being installed on the machines. There are pros and cons to both these approaches to monitoring, no one is better than the other, they are just different approaches to monitoring.


Having said that, server monitoring is an essential part of maintaining an IT network for any company, big or small. It keeps the Administrator informed and looped in to whats going on at both a micro and macro level.
