Establishing Unresponsiveness

Practicing First Aid Training in Calgary is extremely challenging

. In any first aid situation, the first step is to make sure the scene is safe for you to approach the injured or sick person. Once the scene has been made safe, you need to check if the injured or sick person is responding or not. Not everyone you come across will be deeply unconscious. The level of consciousness can vary from the person being totally unconscious to awake and orientated (this means they can answer who and where they are). Many people may appear to be sleeping.

When approaching a person, I like to approach from the feet. I will then kneel beside them (by their torso) and start talking to them. If they do not respond to my voice, I usually give them a bit of a pinch around the collarbone. This is called painful stimuli. Many first aid courses and training organizations often say you should just tap lightly on the shoulder of the person. I like to go a bit further because I know with my kids when they are in a deep sleep, it takes a lot more than just a tap on the shoulder to wake them up. From my experience as a paramedic, and responding to thousands of unconscious people, Ive found that a person who was not responding to my voice or a few light taps on the shoulder did respond to a pinch. Often their eyes opened, or they let out a bit of a groan or mumble. If a person starts talking to you, or starts to moan and groan, we know they are breathing and their heart is beating. The first steps of the primary survey have then been completed except for the major bleed test.

So remember, not everyone you come across who appears to be unconscious will need CPR. There are hundreds of reasons why they may be unconscious or in a drowsy state. Some of the reasons may include a head injury, drinking too much alcohol, a stroke, or a diabetic condition, just to name a few. A pinch on the shoulder area can wake the person up or at least get some kind of response from the person.
