First of all, check your Ethernet cable for problems. It may sound like an obvious issue, but the truth is that a damaged cable is often the source of various problems. It could be bent, crimped, or have the rubber shielding pulled from it for some reason, but any of these issues can slow down your connection considerably or even stop it outright. If you find kinks or other damaged spots in your cable, there's really no repair available. You'll have to buy a new cable outright or risk dealing with the sluggish speeds in perpetuity.

If you don't find any damage, the next consideration is simply the length of your Ethernet cable. Do you have a large amount of slack in the cable, or is it just long enough for the connection that you need? If you have multiple items hooked up to your network, check them all. The longer your cable, the more signal strength will be lost and the slower your connection will be. Try to match your cable length with your specific needs to ensure you get the best speeds possible. And if you need a long cable, consider upgrading to a higher quality one.

That's the final consideration to make - the actual quality of your Ethernet cable. Today, the most common cables are Cat-5, Cat-5e, and Cat-6. The Cat-5 is fine for speeds up to 100Mbps, but if you're running long lengths of cable you'll need to use Cat-5e. If your connection speed is between 100Mbps to 1 gigabit, or if you need a cable long Ethernet cable, you'll need to upgrade to the Cat-6 for the best results. They'll cost a bit more but the increase in speed and performance will be worth it. Keep these points in mind and you'll be sure to get the fastest speeds possible.

Ethernet cables are sold in many colours. Some modems are supplied with a Blue Ethernet cable, some with a red one. Though colour does not make any difference.
