Ethics: Do You Behave The Same Online As You Do In The Real World?

How different is your online world from your real world

? Do the ethical rules of the "real world" also translate to how you should behave online? The truth is, the issue of online ethics can be very confusing one because the online or virtual world seems very different from the real world. Many people will do things online they would never dream of doing in the "real world."

A perfect example of this is the content that some people will post on blogs and other online forums. Many blogs are filled with insults, racism, sexually explicit material and outright smears of other people. Not surprisingly quite a few people have stopped paying attention to blogs and other online forums because they are so full of insults.

Another example of this behavior can be found at online dating sites. Many people will and misrepresent themselves in online dating venues to increase their chances of getting a date. Quite a few singles now avoid dating websites because they think everybody who uses such sites is a fraud.

Basic Online Ethics

The internet would be a much better place if people would simply adopt the same ethical standards they use in the real world online. A good ethical rule of thumb for the internet is to do not do anything online you wouldn't do in person.

If you don't lie, cheat, swear, or use racial epitaphs in person don't so online. Follow the same standards of behavior. It is a simple and easy to follow code of conduct that will keep you out of trouble.

Another good standard to follow online is to not do anything you find morally wrong online. If you don't like lying or swearing then don't lie or swear. If you dislike dishonesty then be honest.

Following common courtesy is also a good ethical guideline when online. Apologize to anybody that you have insulted or offended. Avoid any language or conduct that others could find offensive.

In particular be punctual in your appointments and try to keep all business commitments. Don't make promises or commitments that you can not keep.

Following the same ethics online as you follow in your day to day life can help you keep out of trouble online.
