Ever Sabotaged Success?

Ever Sabotaged Success?
So why is it that when something is important to us, it can be just the time when our thoughts and feelings get most confused? And yet at other times, even though things may be difficult, we function perfectly well.
Recently, someone mentioned Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich to me, and while I did rather roll my eyes, I dutifully dug out an old copy and was very pleasantly surprised to find that even today, it really is a fascinating read.
Sex Drive and Auto-Suggestion!
Hill explains how our emotions can either guide us to success or sabotage our efforts at almost every turn. He suggests that sex drive ('sex emotion' as he calls it) is a powerful emotion, and like other emotions it can be channelled, through auto-suggestion, to help us achieve our goals. I can only think chapters on 'sex emotion' and auto-suggestion must have been a bit racy when his book was first published in the mid 20th century.
Even now they offer an intriguing take on the S and A of a SMART goal! But in fact, Hill interviewed many of the most successful businessmen, sportsmen and politicians of his day. Figures such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, J D Rockefeller, and many, many others. From his research he identified a few shared characteristics and beliefs.
Key Success Factors
Intense desire / purpose
Unwavering belief - faith & confidence.
Associating with success-minded others.
The greatest weakness he identified in the pursuit of success, in any area
Lack of self-confidence.
And when you think about it goals are easier to achieve with intense desire, faith, confidence and success-minded friends and more challenging to achieve when any of these are missing.
Auto-suggestion
To enhance these characteristics Hill recommends the use of auto-suggestion, which involves putting doubt aside (at least temporarily) and imagine having achieved the result you want, as vividly as possible, with sight, sound, feelings, even taste and smell. As Hill emphasises, a vital element in auto-suggestion is emotion because strong emotions are easily communicated to what is often called the unconscious mind or auto-pilot.
Sabotage
Negative emotions, tend to sabotage the process, as our auto-pilot ends up with mixed messages, which only confuses it! Some people worry that they are being unrealistic or delusional if they use positive auto-suggestion to imagine great results. They tell me that they need to plan for worst case scenarios, or need to make sensible assessments. Of course, we all need to plan and make sensible assessments - it's simply that negative emotions don't particularly support clear planning or thinking, in fact the opposite is usually true.
If you think you can...
By imagining the outcome we really want with positive emotions (intense desire) we give our autopilot very clear instructions about what we want. And in return we often get back unexpected insights that support greater clarity, better planning and more appropriate action. In fact sometimes people even realise the outcome they are focused on is not what they really want and they are able to make important changes and choices.
You Can....
Take a few minutes in the morning and evening, close your eyes and imagine whatever it is you want to achieve. If you feel any doubts or worries, notice them and then take your mind back to how you would feel if you had complete faith in achieving your outcome.
Auto-suggestion isn't a magic pill or something you do once and forget about, though I have known some people quickly get great results. It works best when you use it every day, to support healthy thinking habits, which of course helps you to think and grow rich, in every sense.
