Defining the term -

A medical assistant is a person who is assigned to be a direct assistant to a doctor. The duties and responsibilities of this person are somewhat similar to that of a nurse. However, the reason for the definition this new word is due to the lack of proper assistant to doctors and nurses in the industry. That is why, they cannot be measured as similar or equal to that of a nurse.

How are they similar to nurses?

There are number of similarities in the responsibilities that are undertaken by a nurse and a medical assistant. For e.g., they are both assigned to take care of the patients and look after their general well-being, checking the vitals, assisting doctors, in surgeries and so on. The point of distinction occurs in terms of some other responsibility that these people have. The medical assistants usually have a longer training program, than that of a nurse. They are even exposed to a longer period of internship and practical experience. This makes them somewhat more knowledgeable than a regular nurse.

Job opportunities -

Due to the boom in the industry, they even have better job prospects. They are usually paid higher than general nurses are, and can easily get jobs at clinics, hospitals, and medical research centers. They are also trained for managerial purposes, and this is another difference from a nurse.

There are a number of institutes, medical schools and colleges that offer training for medical assistance these days, and one should be smart enough to pick a registered and known institute that can give them ample practical experience, because in the end that is what counts. One should also compare the course fees, training duration and placement record offered by various institutes, so that one can get the best knowledge in low prices to make a bright career in the field of allied medical services.
