Nepal offers some of the best trekking regions in the world and one of its most favoured trekking destinations is Everest Basecamp. Each year many adventure trekkers make the journey to Nepal to follow the trail which offers stunning vistas of some of the highest and most famous mountains in the world.

As well as affording the opportunity to reach the famous Everest Basecamp where Sir Edmund Hilary & Tensing Norgay Sherpa made the first successful attempt to climb the summit, the route also offers spectacular views of mountains such as Mt Lhotse, Mt. Amadablam and Island Peak and the wildlife, flora and fauna on this trek are also worth a mention.

The route begins with a 30 minute scenic flight from Nepal's capital Kathmandu to Lukla. The planes are small; typically 16-18 seats and tend to fill up quickly due to the popularity of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Once in Lukla trekkers make their way to Phakding which is about 5 miles away to spend their first night at a Tea House. A Teahouse trek offers accommodation in basic but comfortable local lodges. Hot showers can be made available at an additional cost but be prepared for a bucket filled with hot water!

Heading out of Phakding, along the Dudh Kosi River the route eventually enters the Everest National Park which was established in 1976 to protect the area surrounding Mt. Everest.

One of the memorable sights on the trek is Namche Bazaar, a key trading centre in the region with many shops, hotels and eateries. Acclimatisation here is important before proceeding any higher.

The next stop is the village of Tengboche which is home to the well-known Tengboche Monastery. The view from here is recognised as one of the world's best, panoramic views of the Himalayas.

Along the route to Everest Base Camp there's an abundance of flora and fauna: dense forestation of rhododendron, magnolia and giant firs as well as the opportunity to catch a glimpse of leopards, jackals and mountain thar.

The Everest region is home to the Sherpa people who are descendants from Tibetan migrants who settled in Nepal over 500 years ago. They follow Tibetan Buddhist traditions and have managed to preserve much of their culture despite their growing involvement with Western climbers since the 1920s.

It goes without saying it's a special moment to reach the Everest Base Camp. The views are truly memorable giving a feeling of a paradise on earth.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is for anyone with a strong level of fitness. Trekking days are between 5 to 7 hours carrying a day pack over hilly terrain. The actual number of trekking days can vary depending on the chosen route but typically last for 16/17 days or 20 days plus if going via Jiri, a more strenuous route.

The best time to go is September to late December when the weather is pleasant and skies clear or February to late June when temperatures are cooler.
