Everyone's Favorite Google Apps
Google applications may be some of the most enjoyed. How many people are using Gmail now, or Google Calendars, Google Earth, and of course Google maps? Beyond all the common and typical applications Google has put out, what are some of the other favorite applications people are discovering and enjoying? There are quite a few, but here are a handful:
1. Google Goggles - While this app implies that one would have to wear some type of eyewear, this is not the case. Google Goggles is an app that allows you to search for information through the use of a photo. For instance, you are walking around downtown San Francisco, you see a landmark building, you don't know what it is or its name. You take a photo of it and Voila!, you automatically get information back, based on the image, of what the building's name is, its history and much more. Google Goggles had been introduced to be used on Android but now it is capable of being used on the iPhone. You can also speak your queries and find information or the app can use your phone's location to give you more relevant search results. What other types of things can you analyze beyond buildings? Wine labels, book titles and such will also give you detailed information. The only exception in using this app is that you must have a device that has an auto-focusing camera, which means it works with iPhone 4 and 3GS or iOS 4 or later versions.
2. Latitude - This is an app that allows you to see where your friends are at any give moment. Google maps are pulled up and on it will be indicators of who is where, or if a friend is nearby who might want to meet up. You can also share with you friends where you are. If you don't want friends to see where you are at any give time you can control who sees your location and at what level of detail. There are location alerts that use your location history to only trigger when you're in an unusual place, filtering out routine cases at home or work. If you are worried that your friends can find out where you are without your permission, remember that you have to give permission to be on this system and alerts are sent to both nearby friends if they are sharing their location with each other, even if only one of them has enabled alerts. Alerts also notify friends where you usually are on that day and time to explain why your location is unusual and the alert was sent. You may stop alerts completely by selecting 'disable' and clicking 'save'.
3. Google Shopper - If you are a price comparison shopper or a person who loves to find out all the details of an item before making a purchase, this app is for you. With the app, you scan the covers of items such as a book, media, CD, DVD, or video game or you can search by voice or through barcode scanning.
You will then find prices, reviews, specs and more on that item. You can also find nearby stores who are stocking the item for the lowest price and get directions to that store. Want to share your find with friends, you can do this as well.
4. Voice Search - This app is integrated into other apps but should you be driving while looking for the next gas station, rest stop, or restaurant and can't text in your questions, you can use your voice to do the search. This app was launched in 2008 and now, one in every four searches from an Android phone in the US is by voice. Not only is using your voice safer in some situations, it is just quicker than typing. You can even search for things you know how to pronounce but not spell.
5. Walking Navigation - For those of you who live in the city or are traveling into new cities and love to walk, this app will help you find your way back to your hotel or find your way around. This app is integrated with Google Maps and is for mobile 4.5 on Android. If you need help deciding where to walk (or drive), you can now also use Street View smart navigation or the new Google Maps search bar to guide your choice. Walking Navigation utilizes your GPS navigation system with walking directions that are designed for walkers and utilizes pedestrian pathways. Your phone will even vibrate to alert you when you need to turn. To help you orient yourself with your surroundings, the map will rotate with you as you turn the phone, and walking mode uses satellite view by default. Use it like a virtual compass with satellite imagery to look ahead or help pick out landmarks along the way. While this app is still in beta and Google maps may not have up-to-date information with all walking routes, it is a cool app for sure.
