Everything About Your Tires
The engine is the most important thing to keep in good working order because it drives the whole car
. Stop and think about how that car goes down the road. Obviously, it does on the tires! If those tires aren't properly cared for, then the vehicle might not go down the road at all, and you will be stuck somewhere. Or, at least until you get some new tires to put on it or until someone comes to pick you up. There are several tips and tricks you should follow in order to keep up the condition your tires are in so that they last for the entire life expectancy. Tire care is easy and doesn't take much time if you do it regularly. Take care of your tires before there is a problem and you have to pay a lot more money for a repair.
Check the Air Pressure
The easiest way to care for your tires is to check the air pressure regularly. All you need to do is have a gauge and take a read out of the psi, or the pounds per square inch, in each tire. This should be done every month or two or during the season change, at the very least. The air temperature will effect what the air pressure is inside of the tire. Hot air makes the molecules expand and it will make the tire seem more full. Cold air will shrink the particles and make them smaller, as if the tire is under inflated and needs air.
To fix the problem, you need access to an air compressor. Simply add air to the tire until it reads at the correct pressure for your make and model of the tire. When you don't have an air compressor in the garage, you can go to a gas station and often get access to one for a few quarters, or even free. It only takes a few minutes to replace the air in the tire, but it can add hundreds of miles of life to your tires.
Have the Tires Rotated
The tires need to be rotated at regular intervals. The tires wear in a certain pattern as the car goes down the road. In order to make the tires even all the way across the tread, they need to be moved to the back of the car and to the opposite side. The tires in the back need to be moved up to the front, and the sides need to be switched as well. The average time to change the tires is 8,000 to 12,000 miles per tire rotation interval.
The tires also need to be kept in balance in order to be even. Traveling over bumpy roads can knock a tire out of balance and then cause your car to drive improperly. Driving differently can mean that you're driving with a slight pull to the right or the left, or it can be a severe pull. Aligning your tires is done on a machine in a shop where they are measured. Tires are marked with positive or negative degrees and need to be as close together as possible to be aligned. Aligning your tires should be done once a year unless you think your car is driving with a pull, or after it has been on a lot of bumpy roads.
