Criticism on Wells Tower's novel

'Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned''

The author demonstrates the other side of human's nature and ambivalence. The story is somewhat profane. It is realistic to say that now profanity is growing less criticizes upon in the post-modern society and writers include it in their novels. The reason is that profanity is used to describe strong emotion, or to describe a sense of reality, or simply to put emphasis on a character's personality.

From the historical point of view the novel is the aim to depict the Viking era. The author has done some research on the proper names such as Northumbria, Mercia, and Slesvig Slie Fjord. It is obvious that the narrator is interested in the history of Vikings. The names as Naddod, Djarf, Haakon were truly the names of people living centuries ago and nowadays. Those are real names. Naddod was blown off course by a storm on the voyage to Faeroe. Naddod discovered Iceland. Haakon is an ancient name that is still popular and its meaning in Old Norse is noble of the highest race; exalted son.Haakon is a royalname in Norway, too. The geographical names are original as well. For example, in Lindesfarne the second Viking attack was recorded in 793 at the Lindisfarne Monastery in England. So Slesvig - a former name for Hedeby in Denmark, a Viking trading center that was the largest town in the Nordic Countries. In 911 BC, the Vikings settled there. There is Hedeby Viking Museum opened resulting from the excavations in Slesvig.
