Everything You Need To Know About Birch Plywood
When you think of plywood, you probably think primarily of flimsy
, floppy, soggy, nasty, peeling plywood. Its gross, not stable, and you just cant really use it.
If you have ever thought this, you have only seen the poorest quality of plywood. But what you may not realize is that plywood, especially birch plywood, can actually be quite sturdy.
However, you may not know all that much about plywood. After all, what is there to know? It smells funny and looks like you put a tree through a wood chipper and then mashed it together, right?
There is a lot more to plywood. In fact, the above description, while not inaccurate, is not the best way of describing plywood.
Birch plywood is extremely sturdy plywood that is perfect for almost anything that you can think of, with the exception of marine construction (which will be covered later in the article). You can use it as flooring, walling, roofing, whatever floats your boat and keeps her a-rowing.
But what you must first understand is grade. Grade is how good your plywood is. It ranges from A-F and covers not only the pretty side that you see, but also the size that you do not see.
Now, the pieces of plywood, usually not birch, that look like they came from a wood chipper are normally very poor quality. Birch plywood may be A-C quality.
The way that plywood comes to existence starts with a really large log. This log is too wide to be able to make its way through the saw mill, so it is made into plywood instead. It is peeled, layer by layer, and stacked flat.
After this, the pieces are glued together, with the grains perpendicular to one another. This makes the plywood a lot stronger. Once they are glued and somewhat dried, the pieces of unfinished plywood are then baked at an extremely high temperature until the glue sets.
In the end, they are shipped to hardwood stores and warehouses. From there, you can purchase them.
Keep in mind that the glue used in plywood does contain formaldehyde. The amount has been greatly reduced, to lessen the amount of carcinogens.
Also remember that certain varnishes and sealants may compromise the integrity of the plywoods glue and cause it to flake and break down.
With that in mind, do not forget that regular birch plywood isnt marine plywood. This means that it cannot be exposed to high concentrations of moisture for a long time.
Marine plywood cannot be submerged in water, contrary to popular belief. If you find birch plywood that is marine quality, you can use it in things such as boats which are simply exposed to high concentrations of moisture, but not fully submerged for a long period of time.
