Today, a hard drive (or hard disk or HDD) can hold up to 320 gigabytes to 2 terabytes and has a speed of 5400rpm (rotations per minute) to 7200rpm, the slowest to the fastest in order. The faster the speed of the hard drive, the faster you can locate your files and programs and saving time in your computer. The larger the memory space, the more programs and files you can store. You can use a higher spec hard drive if you are an expert computer professional like animators or programmers, but a lower spec hard drive is also good especially if you are an end user.

A hard drive consists of thin discs, magnet, heads, and circuit. These discs, which are called as hard platters, are the essential storage. A hard drive could contain two or more of these, and a spindle holds it together. It spins so fast that you may see it as a blurry disc. Without it, you could not save files and programs. A thin metal head with a magnet attached is responsible in saving your files and programs and locating these when you needed it. The technology used in hard drives is very much the same in cassette tapes. A filmware or circuit connected to the hard drive has a software that makes your files accessible with just a click of the mouse.

With the technology today, hard drives also change their appearance. PATA (Parallel AT Attachment) is often used before to connect hard drives to the mother board, but today SATA (Serial AT Attachment) or SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) takes the scene. PATA looks like a wide connector strip which crams the CPU, while SATA looks like a thin cable that eliminates the cram problem. External hard drives are also available and look like an internal hard drive with a casing and connector. These hard drives are studier, sometimes stackable and come with a SATA or USB (Universal Serial Bus) connector.

If the technology of the hard drive previously mentioned is not enough, then check other computer gadgets with different hard drives. Laptops or notebooks have a smaller hard drive. Cell phones, music devices, game consoles, video devices and other similar gadgets have a compact hard drive suited for them. Truly, the evolution of the hard drive would not stop as long as there are new devices and gadget available on the market.
