. It was also the focal source of artistic, scholastic and as well as revolutionary works and ideas from the very onset. Since then, it has witnessed the emergence of an unending band of author in Kolkata. These authors have gifted the Bengali literature with kings ransom of treasure and vastness. The list of writer in Kolkata starts from the days of the Raj. History confirms, the British introduced the English language among the natives as they used to refer to the Indians by that, in order to fill up the petty clerical posts in their administration. this strategy worked as a boon. With gradual spreading of the language and the European education along with it, Kolkata metamorphosed into a pulsating city of vehement creative ideas. The printing technology received heavy boost a short while ago and around this time, it was in full bloom. This facilitated European education of science and philosophy to travel all way to India, more precisely the British capital in the city of Kolkata. Simultaneously, the social developments and progress took place mostly under the influence of Vidyasagar and Keshab Chandra Sen. These factors blended with the oriental mysticism of the Enlightenment of the Soul under the influence of Paramhansa Sri Ramkrishnadev.

Such an electrifying atmosphere led the souls of a great number of young Indians mostly Bengalis to attain inner wisdom. This propelled them to explore the various creative faculties and as such all aspects of human life got a new lease of life by their Midas touch. This period is rightly classified as the Renaissance of Bengal, which eventually facilitated the Revival of the great Indian nation.

In this era, Vidyasagar the preliminary author in Kolkata presented the students with his Introduction to Alphabets or Varnaparichay. Bankim Chandra, a deputy magistrate by profession, penned a classical novel Anandamath along with a famous song Vande Mataram, which is now the national song of our country. This novel provided invaluable inspiration to young minds in our freedom struggle. Sarat Chandra unraveled the untold miseries of our women folk. Tagore captivated the entire European intellect by recreating the concepts of our Vedas. Such was the in surmounting height of his feat that the Noble Prize for literature was bestowed upon him. It was the first incident of the Noble being awarded to an Asian. An endless list of writer in Kolkata treaded different paths of art and literature and brought more glory to Bengali literature. Michael Madhusudan, Kazi Nazrul, Prabodh Kumar Sanyal etc to name a few.

The post Tagore era especially the 50s and the 60s gifted Bengal with a brand new breed of writer in Kolkata. The eternal romance in the Bengali literature mixed with modern literary styles brewed into a class of its own and presented the readers with a new dimension to the existing literary schools of the language. Jibanananda Das, Sukanta Bhattacharya, Premendra Mitra, Buddhadev Guha the list goes on and on and on.
