Evolution of BMW 530 Diesel Engine

A casual buyer might think that BMW included diesel engines in 5 Series only in recent times, in wake of growing environmental awareness and petrol prices. But in reality, they included diesel engines from very first generation of 5 Series.

First diesel engine used in mid sized sedan was neither a 2.0 nor a 3.0 litre diesel engine but it was a 2.4 litre, straight 6 diesel engine, produced in 1980. An updated version of this straight 6 engine, M20, was later used in second generation 5 series as M21. This time around BMW introduced a turbo charged straight 6, used in 524td, along with traditional 2.4 litre diesel engine, used in 524d.

In third generation 5 Series, BMW again expanded their diesel line and introduced two 2.5 litre diesel engines along with traditional M21. The newest members of diesel lineup were M51D25 UL 16 and M51D25 OL 16, both of which were also straight 6s producing 113 and 141 bhp respectively. They were used in 525td and 525tds.

By fourth generation, M21 engine was discontinued, BMW introduced M47D20 l4, M57D25 l6 and M57D30 l6, raising diesel engine count to 6. These were used in 520d, 525d and 530d respectively. 525td and tds employed same, second generation M51 engines. M57 used in 530d was tweaked in 2000, which raised its output to 190 from 181 bhp.

In fifth generation 5 Series, BMW used a completely new line of diesel engines, this time 520d used 2.0 litre, 148 bhp engine; which was later updated in 2006 and then again in 2007 to produce 161 and 175 bhp respectively. 530 d also received an updated 3.0 litre straight 6, producing 235 bhp, whereas 535d already came equipped with slightly powerful 3.0 litre, 268

bhp, straight 6 diesel engine.

From 2010 onwards, in 5 Series sixth generation, BMW launched 5 engines in whole lineup, ranging from 184 bhp (2.0 litre) to 381 bhp (3.0 litre) diesel engines. Only 520d used the 2.0 litre diesel engine, whereas 530d was fitted with 3.0 litre engines.

Over the years BMW made its diesel engines as efficient as their petrol counterparts, thus making them more wanted in Europe, as European regulations favor diesel engines through tax rebates. Currently BMW 530d diesel engine along with 520ds engine are considered the best engines, making these models most desired models in German manufacturers current lineup.
