Network computing continues to evolve with the new wave of cloud computing

. WAN (Wide area network, namely the Internet) has become the new LAN (Local Area Network, which was traditionally the office network). High availability, flexibility, and pay as you go pricing of the cloud offers huge dependability and value especially for small and medium sized businesses. Coming back to the topic, how is Network Management and Application / Server Support evolving with the way that the network continues to change?

The IT Support Industry started off with Value Added Resellers (VARs) who sold equipment (servers, desktops, routers, switches, firewalls etc) to companies. They then also started to offer systems integration services to manage the infrastructure. All the work needed to be performed on-site at the customer premises, and hence engineers needed to be dispatched every time a customer faced a problem. Sounds really inefficient in todays technology terms, doesnt it?

With the internet going mainstream and the advancement of remote access technologies and tools, the concept of remote IT management or remote systems management became more prevalent. This was the onset of what we call Managed IT Services. Managed Services uses a pro-active approach to managing IT Systems, which includes continuous monitoring of the network and performing recurring preventative maintenance activities and troubleshooting of the systems using remote login tools and software. IT Support Companies charge by the server or device and typically provide unlimited, all inclusive support for the small business network. There are numerous vendors providing platforms and software for remote management including companies like Kaseya, Labtech, Level Platforms, Adventnet, N-Able, Zenith Infotech and many others.

Fast forward to today and the future. The cloud will certainly be a game changer for small and medium business IT Support companies. Going from VARs to services to managed services and now on to the cloud. Is the future for the IT service providers weak then? Not really. Fact remains that businesses need their applications running and monitored and deployed and continuously upgraded. The IT Service provider will continue to play a large role in all of the above.
