Evolution Of Wrestling As A Hi-tech Art
Humans have evolved over a long period of time
, probably millions of years. During this process we have had to face a stiff competition and only the fittest could survive. This has instinctively created a built-in mechanism that tends to make us fighters. It is not surprising then that fighting has refined itself into different forms, an interesting one among them being wrestling.
It is interesting to note that wrestling can be traced back thousands of years, according to the anthropological findings in cave drawings in France and Egypt. These drawings give graphic details of holds known to the sport in its present-day form. The most brutal form of wrestling was practiced by the ancient Greeks who indulged in the sport and took great pleasure in watching people being grappled, held and flung, displaying brute strength that ultimately lead to the ignominious defeat of one of the wrestlers. Though some wrestlers ended up with grievous injuries, fatalities were rare. The Romans refined the sport and eliminated much of the brutality. Wrestling has always been patronized by the Royalty, with some members of some families indulging in the sport themselves.
The early settlers took pride in wrestling, the tradition that they brought along, and were surprised to find that it was being rigorously practiced by the Natives as well, for whom fighting in general was a matter of honor. Greco-Roman and modern freestyle were regulated in formal tournaments and soon prize money started being offered which made the sport all the more interesting and lucrative. Amateur wrestling was a popular pastime in the early years and the first ever organized wrestling tournament was held in New York City in 1888 it got world-wide recognition when it was included in the modern Olympic Games held in 1904 in Port Louis, Missouri. The term hitting below the belt probably originated from the rule (in the Greco-Roman style) that forbade a wrestler to hold the opponent below the belt or trip him to the ground. In Freestyle, however, as the name itself implies, usage of legs in offence and defense was permitted. The wrestler could fling his opponent and pin him to the ground and be declared the winner. Grappling was more to do with immobilizing a person effectively using locks and holds that could leave a wrestler breathless and utterly helpless. This particular form of wrestling, however required enormous reserves of energy that needed to be relied upon.
With the advent of modern technology, all the graphic details of the most modern form of the sport, conducted by WWE has been brought into our drawing rooms by the Cable TV providers like
Charter Cable. So much so that one can watch thrilling matches sitting in comfort without budging an inch. Some of the most memorable matches are: Undertaker vs. Mankind
Hell in a Cell, Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon, (where McMahon had to be carried away in a stretcher) and Jeff Hardy vs. Undertaker Ladder match. Of all the wrestlers, my all time favorite, of course, is the formidable Mark William Calaway who is instantly recognized as The Undertaker. Awesome physique, hard work and endless hours of professional training have made this extraordinary giant what he is today. At 6 foot 9 inches and over 325 pounds, he is considered to be the best. The uncensored (pun intended) matches depicting violence to the core, are not however for the weak hearted. The depiction of raw power is something that can send lustily cheering fans into frenzies. Wrestling has metamorphosed into a hi-tech sport involving incredibly large amounts of money at stake.
