Examining Fire Retardant Tape
A flame retardant refers to substances (other than water of course) that are intended
to dramatically reduce the flammability of objects where they are exposed to intense heat capable of inducing combustion. These types of retardants come in a variety of forms that fit into either physical or chemical retardant categories - relating specifically to their mechanism of action. Depending on the type of retardant, such as those used in fire retardant tape, the components typically try to prevent combustion by blocking or cooling the fuels that would normally act as the fuel source for fire. In some cases, additional char is created to slow combustion or gases are released that displace oxygen needed for flame to spread. Fire rescue crews typically use flames and gels that act as both chemical and physical barriers to spreading flames. In the textile industry, safety is important to rescue workers so fire retardant reflective tape is used to improve visibility without fear of garment combustion.
There are two ways that fire retardants work to protect the fabric of a garment when it's exposed directly or through proximity to enough heat to spur combustion. There is either a physical reaction or a chemical reaction. In some cases, both occur.
Fire Retardant Tape with a Physical Reaction - The primary goal of a physical retardant like that present in some fire retardant tapes is to block the progression of flame while keeping internal materials or those materials behind the coating from combusting - often by keeping them cool. Fire retardant tape can act as an insulating layer for interior materials on rescue gear.
Fire Retardant Tape with a Chemical Reaction - Depending on the manufacturing process there are a number of ways to chemical halt fire progression or to chemically treat textiles. One of the most common methods is to treat rescue garments and fire retardant reflective tape with chemicals that react to the gases releases from burning textiles. This chemical reaction creates an abundance of carbon char which dramatically slows the progression of the fire in the garment, prevent rapid combustion.
Keeping Fire Retardant Tape Clean - The issue with fire retardant tape is that it should not (or rather cannot) be cleaned by traditional methods. Detergents we use every day in keeping clothing clean can actually ruin the chemical fire retardant coating on flame retardant reflective tape. To safely maintain fire and rescue gear, manufacturers recommendations should be followed for cleaning.
The worst treatment for flame retardant reflective tape is an industrial wash, especially when it's not recommended by the manufacturer. To be safe with your fire retardant reflective tape, opt for a simple wash free of detergents and fabric softener and line dry the garments.
