The CompTIA A+ training program covers four areas of training; you're thought of

as competent at A+ when you've passed the test for just two specialist areas. This is why the majority of training establishments limit themselves to 2 study areas. Seek out help from a professional advisor that 'gets' the commercial realities of the area you're interested in, and is able to give you 'A day in the life of' understanding of what kinds of tasks you'll be undertaking day-to-day. It just makes sense to know if this change is right for you before you jump into the study-program. There's really no point in starting your training and then realise you've made a huge mistake.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by those mulling over a new direction is that of 'training segmentation'. Essentially, this is the breakdown of the materials for timed release to you, which completely controls what you end up with.

Typically, you will purchase a course requiring 1-3 years study and get sent one module each time you pass an exam. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this:

It's not unusual for trainees to realise that their training company's usual training route isn't ideal for them. It's often the case that it's more expedient to use an alternative order of study. Could it cause problems if you don't get everything done in the allotted time?

Courses are now available in disc format, so you can study at your own computer. Utilising the latest video technology, you can sit back and watch the teachers showing you precisely how to do something, and then practice yourself - in a virtual lab environment.

You'll definitely want a demonstration of the study materials from any training college. The package should contain slide-shows, instructor-led videos and lab's for you to practice your skills in.

Go for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media in all circumstances. You can then avoid all the difficulties of broadband 'downtime' or slow-speeds.

Don't accept anything less than the most up to date Microsoft (or any other key organisation's) authorised exam preparation and simulation materials.

Don't fall foul of relying on unofficial exam preparation systems. The terminology of their questions can be completely unlike authorised versions - and often this creates real issues once in the actual exam.

'Mock' or practice exams can be invaluable as a resource to you - so much so, that at your actual exams, you don't get phased.
