Examining Various It Career Paths
The great thing about the Information Technology field is that there's so much variety
. If you don't like one particular aspect of it, you might try something else, instead. On the other hand, with so many choices, you may have some trouble deciding on which aspect you'd like to concentrate. Indeed, there are many IT career paths upon which you could embark.
One thing you'll need to decide is whether you want to work with desktop computers, with servers, or with networking equipment. Each of these areas of interest requires a seperate set of skills, and has its own available set of certifications. Within each of these areas are different sub-areas.
In the desktop field, you might either work for a store building and repairing them, or you could work in an enterprise setting, keeping software and operating systems properly updated. You'd also help out with maintaining security, ensuring that anti-malware and firewall programs are kept properly updated. (This is actually something that you can start doing yourself, by building and maintaining desktop computers for friends or family.)
There are additional choices to be made if you desire to work with servers. That's because of all the different operating systems currently being used on servers. Choices include Linux, Windows Server, Unix, and BSD. (There is a server version of MacOS X, but it's not that widely used.)
Regardless of the operating system, there are many different server skills for a person to master. Normal tasks would include setting up DNS servers, DCHP servers, and file servers. More advanced technicians might want to learn about setting up either high-performance or high-availability server clusters.
Many various training programs are offered for those who want to work in the server field. These programs will each concentrate on only one operating system. A vendor's certification programs are arranged into different levels, normally beginning with a "technician" level and ending with an "engineer" level.
There are also many options from which to choose in the networking field. There are several different vendors of networking equipment, and each vendor has its own certification program. Each vendor will have different paths for their certification programs. You might choose to concentrate on setting up and maintaining normal data network equipment, or you might choose to go into the world of Voice over IP (VoIP) networking. If you decide to go into the security field, you can learn how to configure network firewalls or Access Control Lists. You could also choose to learn how to deal with Intrusion Detection Systems. As in the server world, each vendor will have different levels in their certification programs.
Regardless of which of these IT career paths you embark upon, you'll need to get trained. If you do a web search, you'll find much free training literature that may help. But, the quality of these free materials is quite uneven, and they are often either wrong or out-of-date. Instead, you might want to search for training vendors that sell either on-line courses, or traditional courses that are held in a brick-and-mortar classroom. Either way, you'll want to go with a course that's up-to-date, provides hands-on training, and that has an instructor available for answering questions. Training videos and practice certification exams, sold from web-based stores by multiple vendors, might also be helpful.
