Examining the Basic Operation of Recliner Sofas

You know they are comfortable and look fantastic in your living space, but knowing the basic operation of recliner sofas can help you to choose a well-made brand that will last for many years. This popular style of sofa can be found in homes across the country. Not all models are created equally though, and the quality of the mechanisms inside are often what determine the durability and dependability of a reclining sofa.

How Do Reclining Sofas Work?

Basic models operate with a lever that controls the positions of a sliding frame. Springs are installed to bring the frame back to its original position with ease. Lever operated models often have only three positions - fully closed, fully open and mid-way. The springs will naturally pull the recliner back to the fully closed position once the lever has released the locking mechanism.

Higher end models include automated reclining action or lever less motion. Both of those use more fluid motion and offer a wider range of positions. The basic idea is still the same however, including a sliding frame and springs.

Automated mechanisms use a motor and can be paused at any stage in the reclining action. They are quiet and smooth but tend to be the most expensive on the market. They may come with a remote control system or have push button control on the sides of the furniture.

Lever less models operate in almost the same principle as levered styles do, except that the person sitting on the sofa powers them, when the back of the chair is pushed, the sliding frame moves and the reclining action starts. As that backward pressure is relieved, the springs act to bring the sliding frame back into its original position. There are no locking mechanisms to hold the recliner in place.

Space-saving or wall hugging designs also use the same style of movement, except that the sliding frame is more elaborate. Instead of the simply the seat and footrest moving forward while the back cushion leans backward, with space-saving models the entire chair (or sofa section) moves forward as it reclines.

No matter which style of recliner you choose, the quality of construction is key. The frame needs to be solid and the tracks for movement should be clear and smooth. Springs should have good tension and be able to last for years with constant movement. If there are levers or buttons in the design, they need to be easily accessible and of durable design. Motors on automated models should be simple and long lasting.

The very best recliner sofas will deliver years of comfort in your home. Be sure to choose the highest quality construction and trust that the whole family will appreciate your investment in this valuable furniture.
