Excel offers many file extensions; each extension has its own unique feature
. Every extension of it helps in typical situations. Everyone needs to know about these extensions. Every file in windows operating system has a specific extension, which may be hidden. You can enable it by using My Computer or Windows Explorer; open the folder containing files you want to view. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab. To view all hidden file types, click the Show hidden files and folders option. To see all name extensions, clear the Hide file extensions for known file types check box. Click Apply.
Here I am going to explain file types related to spreadsheets. Don't get confused the words file formats and file extension they both one and the same.
Excel 2003:
It is a previous version and it has many extensions, they can be read and write in later versions such as Excel 2007 & 2010.
1. 'XLS': It is a default extension in an application. It's a normal regular work book which may contain functions, charts, tables, pivot tables & pivot charts. The extension at the end of the file name has '.xls'.
2. 'XLT': Another extension is 'xlt' which also called work book template. We can create default work book template, which defines the formatting or content of the new work books that open when we start application. A template includes formatting, styles, page headers, row and column labels. The file extension for template is '.xlt'.
3. 'XLM': One of the most important extension is '.xlm', it is also called as macro enabled work book. If we write any VBA code in one of the VBA module we have to save it in.xlm format to know it's a macro enabled work book. It also helps application to know its a macro enabled work book.
4. 'XLA': Another extension is.xla, which is a macro enabled add-in file also called as Add-in. User can create an add-in from excel work book file. And it is not a member of the workbooks collection.
5. 'CSV': CSV is a text file type that supports by excel it is also called "Comma-Separated Value" files. In this file columns of data are separated by a comma (,).
Excel 2007/2010:
It is the latest version it supports all file formats mentioned above with slight changes in the extension.
2003 - 2007/2010
'.xls' - '.xlsx'
'.xlm' - '.xlsm'
'.xlt' - '.xltx'
'CSV' file format will be remain same for all versions.
xlsx, xlsm and xltx files types of Excel 2007 and 2010 cannot be viewed in Excel 2003 version. But xls, xlm and xlt files types can be viewed in Excel 2007 and 2010. For Excel 2003 users compatibility pack should be installed in the system to view files of Excel 2007 and 2010. In Excel 2007 and 2010, we have an option called save as "Excel 97-2003".
