These exit signs are mostly placed at the back of a room or an end of a hallway where stairs or ladders lead down to open ground, the ground floor exit, or a safe zone. Using the common entrance and exit for emergencies may cause delays when evacuation is in progress. That is why employees, students, or clients should know where the emergency exits are, with the help of exit signs.

During emergencies, exit signs are activated causing it to blink red lights, catching the attention of people and indicating where the exits are. In the event that there are no emergencies, exit signs are still lit up for easy visibility during night time. The meaning of these signs is also taught during orientations in schools, work facilities and business establishments. Even in residential places like condominiums or flats, emergency exits and what the exit signs mean are taught out to new residents.

It is important for everyone to remember where the exit signs are. These are not only meant to comply with the municipal safety measures but are also vital instruments in saving people's lives.
