Graduating from college is an exciting time full of expectations and hopes
. Most people, upon graduating, have their career goals all lined up and underway. Unless you happen to be me...and you graduate with no plans for a career other than getting out of college and not having to pay tuition anymore. I knew when I graduated that I wanted to do something fun and high-paying.
I just hadn't made any provisions find that elusive perfect job. And my degree in humanities wasn't helping me plot out a vision for employment.
I loved studying in the liberal arts department. I enjoyed my classes on World Civilization and Modern Art. I ate up everything I learned and had a great time at it. While studying as a student I had the chance to work at the local public radio station. I figured when I graduated I'd find a job similar to my student work as a producer and reporter. Little did I know how difficult it is to find substantial employment in the field of public broadcast.
After a few months of seeking employment in the radio industry, I decided I'd better just find anything I could. I applied for work at a local temp agency and started working various odd jobs. This company specialized in human resource staffing, but I realized after a while that I didn't have the necessary attention to detail skills needed to work in HR. I enjoyed to diversity a temp agency provided me, but I soon realized that I'd need to find something more permanent so I could make more of a decent living.
I finally found work as an activities director at a nearby retirement home. I worked there for about 7 months and had a good time. It was interesting to me to see where I ended up after graduating with a bachelors of arts in a field so unrelated to geriatrics. I used many of my skills gained in college daily while planning fun activities for the residents.
So what is the moral to my story? Never be fully confident that just because you have a college degree you'll be able to get a job as soon as you graduate. You may need to be flexible and work a few jobs that may not seem like they fit your degree. You never know what might pop up to interest you.
