Expendables 2 Too Many
Just like Rocky, Sylvester Stallone does not seem to know when to quit
. Unlike Rocky, Stallone is not producing wins late into his career. Rather than taking a risk or producing movies that push the envelope, Stallone chooses to cash in on what made him famous by focusing on BIG. Big explosions, big muscles, big guns, and even more big names grace the screen of Stallones most recent clich action flick, The Expendables 2.
The first Expendables was certainly nothing to write home about. Combine all of the big action stars from the last thirty years, throw in a stock story about a war lord, give them plenty of guns, and start filming. The story was forgettable, and you could have watched the movie with mute on and not have missed anything as far as dialogue is concerned. The action might have been amazing, if you could have actually seen anything. Stallone apparently has not worked the most important muscle, his brain, as most of the action takes place in a nighttime raid or in underground tunnels. This lead to blinding muzzle flashes and explosions randomly happening onscreen that acted like SWAT flash bangs being thrown at the confused audience.
Expendables 2 does not offer much more than its predecessor. Well besides even more muscles, guns, names, and explosions of course. Much of the original cast is back with cameos by the cult favorite Chuck Norris (insert a joke about his beard here) and the Governator making a larger appearance than the previous film.
Its not all bad. In the first installment of the Expendables Stallone tried to create a dark (figuratively and literally) and serious film that pits the unsung heroes against a man threatening humanity itself. A big bite to chew on for anyone, especially someone used to the throwing punches or lead, thankfully Expendables 2 takes a different approach.
Maybe he realized the comedic aspect of a team of super soldiers whose average is over 60, or maybe he the success of the first movie just put him in a good mood, whatever the case is Expendables 2 does not try to be something it is not. Embracing the humor and extravagance of the cast and plot, the film is riddled with one liners and puns that will leave old fans happy and new ones amused.
Rumors have it that Expendables 3 could be an action packed all-female of super soldiers, or that Clint Eastwood may direct it or both, heaven forbid. It seems after the surprising success of the first two installments a third is going to happen no matter what.
All in all, Expendables 2 is more of the same, a lot more. Rather than trying to recreate the glory days for the aging action stars it embraces what made all of their old movies great: over the top action sequences, corny lines, and a forgettable plot. The perfect
moviefor bros, beers, big screens, and the full surround sound experience.
