Expenses Students Must Consider Before Renting a Property in Edinburgh

Edinburgh universities and colleges have students from all corners of the world. For these people deciding where to live is a big decision as they are unfamiliar with the city. House hunting can be exciting but at the same time it is very stressful. Best suited properties for students are always snapped up quickly so it is important that one should get organized and start looking up for a place as soon as you are in the city.

Getting Started:

Speaking to friends and your university can be a major help, as they can help identify student towns and established areas which mostly students tend to favor. Living in student renowned areas has many advantages. First of all they are always close to university campus. These areas have good public transport links. The surroundings are lively and friendly as it is a student residential area. Moreover a number of supermarkets and convenience stores are at a close proximity. At the same time living in a student renowned area can be problematic. These areas mostly have an increased crime rate, plus, they have higher noise levels.

Consider how much you can Afford:

You should consider all the costs that you will have to deal with, once you rent a property. Rent is just one of them. You should calculate all these so that you have a rough idea of what you can afford.

You will have to pay for the TV license either annually or in monthly installments. If you are renting a property in the form of a group tenancy then you will need just one license. On the other hand if you have entered into individual agreements then each person who owns and uses a TV will need a license.

Besides this there will be other utility bills. You must always talk to your landlord or letting agent about so that you know what exactly they require from you. Before handing in your deposit they will ask for proof of payments. So you must handle them with care.

Moreover you will also need an internet. Even though this is optional but it is unlikely that a student in this day and age will live without it. You will want it for your revision, coursework, facebook etc. You will also have to pay the council tax if you are a part time student or if you are living with part time students. Full time students are exempt from it. Lastly food and cleaning expenses are also something that you will have to deal with.
