Experience Is The Stuff Of Authorhood

I have a close friend, Nik Halik, from Australia

. And we both have the achiever mentality-we're both wired that way. He's had some splendid investment success; he's had some outrageous adventures. There's no other way to describe him than as a multi-millionaire Australian adventurer.

That's what he's doing with his life. He's making an imprint.

I was just thinking-as an example of the ironies that happen to us in life-about how his biggest dream in the world, from the days of his boyhood, when the Encyclopedia Britannica was introduced into his house, was to be an astronaut.

No, he did not make it the conventional way that you would suspect, by going through the military. He had a few problems with asthma and his vision; and you know, he's actually solved those problems now.

And he's found out a way to be an astronaut, although he's no longer at the recruitable military age. He's 43 as the clock strikes right now, but he's found a way to accomplish his dreams, everything that he wanted.

He's paying for it. Yes, he's paying to receive the astronaut training, but no, he's not going as a tourist. He's got a job to do. He can't get in there if he's not physically fit and healthy. He's way, way into extreme adventure-he's the kind of guy who climbs mountain peaks.

Everest is his big one. He's climbed five of the tallest. Everest is #7; he's got six to run down. That's tough stuff.

You know, this guy is nothing but exceptional. This guy has gone to extremes, and is going to extremes, to fulfill his dreams. He's worthy, adventurous, and wow, he gets mountains of respect from me! And I highly recommend reading his book, The Thrillionaire. That's what he uses his millions for: to have thrills.

Reading that book, I just couldn't help but be struck at the difference in the ease of accomplishment of what this man set for his goals, or with this man's heart, or with this man's destiny. It happened when he was a child, and his destiny set.

He had to pay $25 million to the Russians-the Americans would never do it, but the Russians accepted him into their space training program. His greatest hero is the first man to ever fly into space anyway, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

So bingo, he rips it off, peels it off and does it.

And I'm thinking, "You know what? My 'ah-ha,' my deepest dream in the entire world, that came to me in childhood, in the second grade-I know exactly when, where, how, and what I was doing-was just to be an author."

Look, I've accomplished a lot. I've circled the globe, and that is my thing today-world-roving freedom. But it started with a desire to be an author. And you know, how much less effort, equipment, expense is required?

If you're not sitting out at your mother's backyard, you could be sitting out at a public park for free and scribbling poetry, or articles, or writing your grand opus. Or you could be sitting out at the most exotic beach or resort that you've ever visited.

It's real easy. Experience is the stuff of authorhood, and Nik Halik is a supreme example of going for experience. And even vicariously, living that with him, I am better off-and I know that you can be, too.

Experience your desires!
