Ancient Hindu literature has been considered by historians and critics as being some

of the finest works to be produced doing that period anywhere in the world. These epics are usually thousands of pages long and have elaborate storylines and contain underlying themes of morality, heroism and ethics. Among them the Mahabharata receives special reverence among Hindus as it is considered to be a narrative of the religions history.

Written in Sanskrit more than 2,500 years ago, this epic work of literature is said to have been written Vyas who is considered to be one of the seven immortal avatars of Vishnu. Therefore it is no wonder that his cenotaph, the Vyas Chhatri in Jaisalmer, is a place that is inherently popular with local and foreign tourists.

The importance of Vyas is twofold for the Hindus; firstly, he is considered to be the author of one of longest epics in the world (the aforementioned Mahabharata); secondly, he is remembered for his work in editing the Veda, which is considered to be the foremost publication in Hindu theology.

Vyasas cenotaph, apart from being a hugely important site, is also known as Sunset Point because it allows it visitors to witness one of the most beautiful sunset panoramas across the mountains of Jaisalmer. It is difficult not be swept away in the sheer beauty of the location and the mysticism surrounding the great author Vyas. One almost expects one of the great battles of Mahabharata to begin on the valleys below, with the thundering hooves of a thousand horses leading the charge.
